Intervener Services
Empowering the DeafBlind Community
Intervener services are a vital part of the Missouri School for the Blind (MSB) Outreach, providing the essential “bridge to the world” for students with combined vision and hearing differences. Our mission is to ensure every student who is DeafBlind has the direct support they need to learn, communicate, and connect with their environment. What is an Intervener?
- Provide Environmental Access: They facilitate access to information that is usually gained through sight and sound.
- Support Communication: They help develop and implement the student’s unique receptive and expressive communication methods.
- Foster Independence: Following the philosophy of “Do with, NOT for,” they promote the student’s autonomy and social-emotional well-being.
- Collaborate with Teams: They act as a key member of the student’s educational team, working under the guidance of classroom teachers to meet Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
Intervener Training & Professional Development
Through the Missouri DeafBlind Technical Assistance Project (MoDBTAP), we offer comprehensive training for those looking to specialize in this field.
Open Hands Open Access (OHOA) Learning Modules
We utilize the Open Hands Open Access (OHOA) Modules, a national online resource designed to build the specific skills needed for DeafBlind intervention.
- Self-Paced Learning: Modules are available online, allowing participants to work at their own pace.
- Evidence-Based Practices: Training covers sensory systems, building trust, routines, and concept development.
- Broad Relevance: While designed for interveners, these modules are also excellent for parents, teachers, and administrators.
Benefits of Becoming an Intervener
