Braille Challenge
Braille Challenge – students in first grade through high school compete in five categories which require them to transcribe, type and read Braille using a Perkins Brailler. Students are tested on reading and brailling speed, accuracy, comprehension and spelling as well as reading charts and graphs. The top students at this preliminary contest are invited to Los Angeles each summer to compete against the winners of regional contests throughout the country.
Winners of the regional contest at MSB, held in February, 2010, received gift certificates to Best Buy:
Apprentice: Lydia Olmsted, 1st; Sam Doman, 2nd; Zyshaun Cross-Williams, MSB, 3rd.
Freshman: Alexis Kricho, 1st; Kathryn Hurd, MSB, 2nd; Andrew Adolphson, 3rd.
Sophomore: Ashley Foley, 1st; Brandon Hahs, 2nd; Amber Messmer, 3rd.
Junior Varsity: Abby Trimble, 1st; Annie Donnell, 2nd; Ashley Fleeman, 3rd.
Varsity: Kristyn Hagan, 1st; David Brown, MSB, 2nd; Brett Wilhelm, 3rd.

The Braille Challenge is a program of the Braille Institute and is co-sponsored in St. Louis by MSB and Lighthouse for the Blind. Lighthouse provided the t-shirts and gift certificates.
